This presentation outlines the challenges facing the EU in relation to AI. As the debate on the structure and priorities of the EU’s new Framework Programme for Research and Innovation (FP10) approaches, and in the context of the launch of European Defence Preparedness 2030, it is timely to analyse the Opportunities and Threats of the European defence industry in positioning itself for a technology that will play a central role in advanced weapon systems and military decision-making in the next decade.
Aureliano Da Ponte is a consultant within the Janes Strategic Services consulting team, based in Madrid. As a member of a multinational team of consultants, he has conducted research on a variety of issues, including the global defence industry, international affairs, technology sovereignty and the use of artificial intelligence for disinformation campaigns in Europe.
Prior to his current role, Aureliano held several positions within the Argentine Ministry of Defence. He contributed to the European Commission’s Human Brain Project on technological innovation issues. Additionally, he has served as a researcher at the Innovative Business Forum of Madrid on the topic of artificial intelligence and defence.
Aureliano holds a PhD in Economics and Innovation Management from Complutense University of Madrid, a Master in Strategy and Geopolitics from the Argentine Army War College, a Master in National Defence from National Defence University, a master’s in political science (Argentina), and a Diploma in Strategy and Defence Policy from the US National Defence University. His areas of expertise include geopolitics and technology, the defence industry, defence R&D in disruptive and emerging sectors, AI, international security, and intelligence affairs.
